This set of song lyrics or what maybe qualifies as a poem was written around 1982 during the Reagan era. The Moral Majority was co-founded in 1979 by Jerry Falwell an American Baptist pastor, televangelist, and conservative activist from south of the Mason-Dixon Line following his own tour of the country to raise money. As an activist with the power of a television show, he was frequently in the press at the time.
The Moral Majority decried the rights of women through its opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment and portrayed issues such as abortion, divorce, feminism, gay and lesbian rights, and the Equal Rights Amendment as attacks on the traditional concept and values of American families. In addition, they were opposed to Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT).
Disbanded in the late 80s, notably at a convention in Las Vegas (the humour is not lost on me), the Moral Majority under the guise of traditional family values consolidated a number of previously disparate issues creating a social platform embraced by many conservative republicans. The separation between the Church and State is imperative for true freedom of religion to exist. Personally, I’ve always had a problem with anyone who wanted to convince someone that they should convert to any faith. I’m a proponent of live and let live and trying to have compassion for others and yourself too. We all have a shadow, but that doesn’t mean you need to project it on others to redeem yourself.
The Moral Majority’s social agenda
Some issues for which the Moral Majority campaigned included:1
Promotion of traditional family values and opposition to media outlets accused of promoting an anti-family agenda
Opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment and Strategic Arms Limitation Talks
Opposition to state recognition or acceptance of homosexual acts
Prohibition of abortion, including in cases involving incest or rape
Support for Christian prayers in schools
Proselytising to Jews and other non-Christians for conversion to Christianity
